Montgat is a small coastal town just north of Barcelona, and like hundreds of Catalan municipalities in 1937, its local government issued emergency fractional currency after the Republic's coinage disappeared from circulation almost entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply swallowed by wartime disruption. These municipal notes, collectively catalogued under the Catalan emergency issues, were printed by C.A.M. in Barcelona, which handled an enormous volume of such work for surrounding towns during this period.
Turró 1576 is not a rare entry by the standards of the series, but Montgat's issues are less frequently encountered than those of larger neighboring municipalities, reflecting its modest population and correspondingly limited print runs.
