Monterrubio de la Serena is a small municipality in the Badajoz province of Extremadura, and this 50 céntimos piece is a product of the fractional currency crisis that paralyzed Republican-controlled Spain in 1937. With silver coinage hoarded and centrally issued small change increasingly unavailable, hundreds of Spanish municipalities — many with populations in the low thousands — printed their own emergency paper. Monterrubio was among them.
The thick card stock was a practical choice: thinner paper disintegrated rapidly in daily market use. Gari catalogues this as the B variety, implying at least one earlier or concurrent issue from the same council.
