Montán is a small municipality in Castellón province, and like dozens of similar Valencian towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency in 1937 when Republican-zone coin shortages became acute. These consejo municipal issues were authorized under the framework established by the Generalitat de Catalunya and later, more loosely, by Republican authorities across Aragón and Valencia — though many small-town emissions operated with minimal oversight and varying degrees of official sanction.
The Gari reference number is unassigned, which typically indicates a poorly documented emission with few known survivors. Montán's total wartime population was well under a thousand, so original circulation would have been extremely limited even by local scrip standards.
