Monistrol de Bages is a small municipality in the Bages comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of comparable towns during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own fractional currency in 1937 to address the acute shortage of small-denomination coinage — silver and copper having been hoarded, melted down, or simply withdrawn from circulation almost immediately after July 1936. The Republican government's inability to supply adequate fiduciary coinage to the provinces forced local councils to become de facto issuers, producing notes that were legally valid only within their own municipal boundaries.
Imprenta Montañà in Manresa handled production for numerous Bages-region municipalities during this period, which occasionally creates confusion about the issuing authority when notes surface without full documentation.
