Monistrol de Montserrat is a small municipality at the foot of the mountain, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War it issued its own fractional currency when Republican Spain's central supply of small change collapsed entirely after 1936. The Centre d'Administració Municipal in Barcelona printed these for dozens of ayuntamientos simultaneously — Turró's cataloguing of such notes reveals just how industrial the process became, with standardized layouts and municipal seals dropped in as variables.

Local issues from villages this small were redeemed or destroyed in bulk after the Nationalist victory in early 1939, and survivor rates are low.
