Mequinenza is a small town in Aragón at the confluence of the Segre and Ebro rivers, and in 1937 it sat inside Republican-held territory during active fighting. Like dozens of Aragonese municipalities that year, its local council issued fractional paper money to address a genuine shortage of coins — silver and copper had been hoarded or melted, and the Republican government's own small change was insufficient to keep local commerce moving.

Printed by Imp. Pagès in Lleida, this is strictly a wartime expedient, valid only within Mequinenza itself.
