50 Céntimos Menàrguens

Menàrguens is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coin shortages became acute after 1936. These local paper issues — collectively known as moneda local or paper moneda de necessitat — were produced by municipal councils with almost no oversight, which accounts for the enormous variation in printing quality, material, and format across the series.

Turró catalogued over 1,700 distinct Catalan local issues from this period. That this one survives at all is notable given the improvised card stock typically used and the political urgency surrounding its destruction after the Nationalist takeover.
