Mediona is a small municipality in the Alt Penedès comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly sized towns it issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation almost entirely by mid-1937. These hyper-local emissions were authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's framework for municipal money, but the practical execution — paper quality, printing method, quantities — was left entirely to each ajuntament. Mediona's issue reflects that improvisation directly: thick card stock was a common local substitute when proper banknote paper was unavailable.

Turró catalogued over 2,000 distinct Spanish Civil War municipal issues; Mediona's 50 Céntimos at #1492 is well into the long tail of minor emissions, suggesting limited surviving quantities.
