One of hundreds of locally issued emergency notes produced during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone faced an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage. The U.G.T. (Unión General de Trabajadores) agricultural collective at Mateo de las Fuentes — a village in the Murcia region — issued this note as a functional internal currency, valid within the collective's economic sphere and essentially worthless outside it.
Thick card stock was a deliberate choice at this scale: small pieces of plain paper were too easily forged or confused with scraps. The Gari catalogue documents over nine hundred variants of these Republican-zone local issues, and condition survival is almost entirely a matter of chance.
