Mataró's wartime municipal issues belong to a vast but poorly documented wave of local emergency currency that flooded Republican-held Catalonia after July 1936, when the collapse of normal banking and the hoarding of metal coinage left small transactions nearly impossible. Hundreds of municipalities, collectives, and trade unions printed their own notes, with almost no central coordination. This one was produced by Indústries Madriguera — a Barcelona printing firm that had been collectivized under the anarcho-syndicalist wave sweeping Catalan industry at the time.
Turró's catalog remains the primary reference for this chaotic period, and even it leaves gaps. Attribution and survival rates for Mataró's issues are uneven.
