During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone experienced a catastrophic collapse in small-denomination coinage — hoarding, melting, and general monetary chaos left towns and villages unable to make change for everyday transactions. Hundreds of local authorities, cooperatives, and agricultural syndicates across Catalonia responded by printing their own emergency paper, known collectively as moneda local or paper moneda. The Sindicat Agrícol i Caixa Rural de Masó was one of the smaller issuers, serving the village of Masó in the Alt Camp comarca of Tarragona province.

The square format is unusual even within this already irregular series — most Catalan emergency notes of the period were rectangular. At 42 x 42 mm it is among the smallest issues in the AL catalogue.
