Llagostera is a small Catalan town in the Gironès comarca, and like hundreds of other municipalities during the Spanish Civil War, it issued its own fractional paper money after the Republic's silver and copper coinage effectively vanished from circulation in 1936–37. These local issues — collectively known as moneda local or paper de guerra — filled an acute transactional void that the central government and the Generalitat de Catalunya were slow to address. Imprenta Vilallonga in nearby Cassà de la Selva printed for several surrounding municipalities, which means design similarities across different issuers from this region are common and can cause misattribution.
