Linares was one of hundreds of Spanish municipalities forced to print emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's small coinage effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply not reaching the provinces. The Consejo Municipal stepped in as issuer by necessity, not by monetary authority, and the Lores Hnos. print shop on the same streets that processed the town's commercial printing was pressed into the job.

Linares's economic identity was inseparable from its lead mining industry, and the town remained under Republican control through most of the war. The 824-B designation in Gari's catalog distinguishes this from at least one variant in the series, likely a signature or color difference.
