Les Preses is a small municipality in the Garrotxa comarca of Girona, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency after the collapse of coin circulation in 1936–37. The Republican government's inability to supply small change forced local councils — ajuntaments — to fill the gap themselves, producing notes that were technically only valid within their own municipal boundaries.
Gràfiques Minerva in Olot handled a substantial volume of these Garrotxa-region municipal issues, which gives the printing a consistency unusual among emergency local currency. The Turró catalogue remains the definitive reference for this material.
