La Sentiu de Sió is a small municipality in the Noguera comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan towns during the Civil War, it issued fractional paper currency in 1937 to address the acute shortage of metallic coin. Republican militias and collectivized industries were absorbing copper and silver faster than they could be replaced in local commerce. The Ajuntament filled the gap with locally authorized paper.
Printed by Imprenta Unió Obrera in Balaguer — the comarca's printing center — this issue shares a production origin with several neighboring municipal notes from the same period. The Turró catalog documents over 2,000 such Catalan emergency issues; that this one earned a distinct reference number speaks to how granular that documentation is, not to any particular rarity on its own terms.
