La Guardia — now called Guardia de Jaén — was one of hundreds of small Andalusian municipalities that issued emergency fractional paper during the Spanish Civil War after metallic coin disappeared from circulation almost immediately following the July 1936 coup. The Consejo Municipal series from this town is sparsely documented, and attributions in the major Spanish emergency money catalogs sometimes disagree on exact issue dates and authorization details.
These hyper-local céntimos pieces were produced in tiny quantities for purely neighborhood circulation and were redeemable only within the issuing municipality, making survival rates low.
