La Febró is a tiny village in the Baix Camp comarca of Tarragona, and in 1937 its municipal council — like hundreds of other Catalan and Spanish localities — issued its own emergency paper money to address the catastrophic coin shortage that followed the outbreak of the Civil War. The Republican government's silver and copper coinage had largely vanished from circulation almost immediately, hoarded or melted, leaving small transactions effectively impossible.
Tipografia La Fleca in Reus printed emergency notes for numerous surrounding municipalities during this period, which makes distinguishing genuine La Febró issues from later philatelic reprints worth careful attention. The Turró catalogue remains the primary reference for these Catalan local emissions.
