La Canonja was a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coin shortages made everyday commerce nearly impossible. These municipal emissions — collectively known as moneda de necessitat — were technically illegal under central Republican authority, which tried repeatedly and largely unsuccessfully to suppress them throughout 1937.
Turró 641 is among the more obscure entries in the catalogue. The issuing population was small, production runs were modest, and survivors are correspondingly rare.
