Guadix, a mid-sized town in Granada province, was one of hundreds of Spanish Republican municipalities forced to print their own fractional currency during the Civil War after the hoarding of metal coinage created an acute small-change crisis in 1936–37. These emergency local emissions — known broadly as "billetes locales" — were authorized by the Republican government but designed, printed, and circulated entirely at the municipal level, which accounts for the enormous variation in quality and format across the series.
The Gari Mon catalogue distinguishes at least two varieties for this denomination, placing this example at 741-B. Survival rates for Guadix issues are uneven; many were redeemed or simply discarded once the zone changed hands in early 1939.
