Gijón Fabril was a glass manufacturing company, not a bank — yet during the Spanish Civil War, chronic small-change shortages in the Republican zone forced hundreds of industrial firms, cooperatives, and municipalities across Asturias to print their own fractional currency. This is one of them. The Asturian northern front held out until October 1937, when Franco's forces completed their conquest of the region, after which all locally issued Republican emergency paper became immediately worthless and was largely discarded or destroyed.

Survival rates for industrial emergency issues from the Asturian campaign are notably low compared to municipal equivalents, which were produced in larger print runs.
