Gelsa is a small municipality in Zaragoza province, Aragon — well behind the Republican lines in 1937, which is why its municipal council had both the need and the opportunity to issue emergency fractional currency. The céntimo denominations that proliferated across Republican Spain during the Civil War were a direct consequence of coin hoarding and the near-total disappearance of small change from circulation, a problem acute enough that hundreds of municipalities resorted to their own solutions.
The printer, C.A.M. in Barcelona, handled a substantial volume of these local emergency issues across Catalonia and Aragon, which makes attribution relatively straightforward when the imprint survives legibly.
