Garriguella is a village of a few hundred inhabitants in the Alt Empordà comarca of Catalonia, and like hundreds of similarly small municipalities it issued its own emergency paper money during the Spanish Civil War when coin disappeared almost entirely from circulation. These local wartime issues — known collectively as paper moneda de curs forçós — were authorized by the Generalitat de Catalunya from 1936 onward to fill the vacuum left by hoarding and metal requisitions.

Imprenta Trayter of Figueres printed for numerous Alt Empordà municipalities during this period, which means the typographic work here is competent but shared-infrastructure modest. The Turró catalogue remains the essential reference for distinguishing genuine variants within these Catalan municipal series.
