When the Republican government's centralized currency system collapsed at the local level after July 1936, thousands of ayuntamientos across the Republican zone issued their own emergency paper — cartones, vales, and billetes de necesidad — to keep commerce moving. The Municipal Council of Gálvez was one among hundreds of such issuers in Castilla-La Mancha alone.
