| Opmerkingen |
Frailes is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and its local council issued emergency paper fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War — a practice repeated across hundreds of Republican-controlled municipalities after the 1936 military uprising severed normal supply chains and caused coins to vanish almost entirely from circulation. These hyper-local emissions were authorized under a Republican government decree permitting municipal bodies to issue provisional currency when the national supply collapsed.
Most of these municipal notes were crudely produced, often on whatever paper was available, with rudimentary rubber-stamp or typeset printing. Survival rates vary wildly — small-town issues from villages like Frailes were rarely documented systematically, and quantities issued were typically tiny.
