Foixà is a village in the Baix Empordà comarca of Girona with a population that barely exceeded a few hundred during the Civil War years. Like hundreds of Catalan municipalities in 1937, it was forced into issuing its own fractional paper currency after the Republican government's metal coinage effectively disappeared from circulation — hoarded, melted down, or simply not produced in sufficient quantity to meet everyday transactional needs.
The Turró catalog documents these Catalan municipal emissions systematically; Foixà's 50 Céntimos is among the more obscure entries, reflecting a genuinely tiny issuing authority with correspondingly limited print runs.
