Els Guiamets is a small village in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona, and this 50 céntimos note is one of hundreds of emergency municipal issues that flooded Republican-held Catalonia after the July 1936 uprising effectively paralyzed the Spanish banking system and caused small coin to vanish almost overnight. The Generalitat de Catalunya authorized local councils to issue their own paper fractional currency — a practical concession to chaos rather than any planned monetary policy.
Turró catalogues the Guiamets emissions among the rarer small-municipality issues, given the village's population was well under a thousand at the time of printing.
