El Toboso is a small Castilian town best known for its literary association with Cervantes — Dulcinea's hometown in Don Quixote — but in 1937 it was also a Republican-held municipality scrambling to solve a very practical problem. The Nationalist blockades and wartime hoarding had drained small-denomination coinage from circulation across the province of Toledo, forcing hundreds of local councils to print their own emergency scrip. The Consejo Municipal issued notes like this one under authority delegated through the Republic's finance ministry, but execution was entirely local.

The Gari catalogue reference is unassigned, suggesting documentation on this specific denomination remains incomplete — not unusual for the smaller Manchegan municipalities, many of whose emissions survive in very limited numbers.
