El Morell is a small municipality in the Camp de Tarragona, and like hundreds of Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued its own emergency fractional currency when coin shortages made small transactions nearly impossible. The Republican government's inability to maintain an adequate supply of low-denomination coinage pushed this responsibility down to the most local level imaginable — villages of a few hundred inhabitants were suddenly in the business of printing money.
Turró catalogues this as 1620, placing it firmly within the enormous body of Catalan municipal issues from 1936–1938, most of which had hyper-local circulation and were redeemed, lost, or destroyed shortly after the Nationalist advance into the region in early 1939.
