Laboratoris del Nord d'Espanya was a pharmaceutical manufacturing firm based in El Masnou, a small coastal town north of Barcelona. Like hundreds of Catalan businesses, cooperatives, and municipalities, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during 1937 after the Republic's central government proved unable to keep small-denomination coinage in circulation — silver and copper had been hoarded or melted almost immediately after the July 1936 uprising began.
These corporate issues, known collectively as moneda de necessitat, had no formal legal backing beyond local trust in the issuer. A pharmaceutical company's scrip circulating as cash is an unusual artifact even within this already peculiar category.
