El Escorial de la Sierra is a small municipality in the sierra northwest of Madrid, distinct from the royal monastery town of San Lorenzo de El Escorial nearby. During the Spanish Civil War, the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage after 1936 — silver and copper disappeared from circulation almost immediately, hoarded or melted. Municipal councils across the zone responded by issuing their own emergency fractional paper, the so-called "moneda local," with no formal backing and purely local acceptance.

Gari Mon#608-A documents relatively few surviving examples from this particular consejo, which is consistent with the limited print runs typical of sierra-area municipalities with small populations. Redemption after the war was neither guaranteed nor pursued.
