The Consejo Municipal de Dólar issued this 50 céntimos note as emergency fractional currency during the Spanish Civil War, when the Republican zone suffered an acute shortage of small-denomination coinage. Municipal councils across Andalusia resorted to locally printed paper fracciones to keep everyday commerce moving — Dólar, a small village in Granada province, was one of hundreds of such issuers.
Papelería Lacoste in Almería handled printing for several of these municipal issues, which accounts for a degree of consistency in paper stock across otherwise unrelated localities. The sole security feature is an official stamp, applied by hand at the time of issue.
