Cuevas de Vinromá is a small municipality in Castellón province, and like hundreds of Nationalist- and Republican-held towns alike, it resorted to locally printed emergency fractional currency in 1937 when the Civil War severed normal coin supply chains. The Banco de España had essentially stopped supplying small-denomination coinage to Republican territory, leaving municipal councils — the consells — to paper over the gap with whatever printing resources were locally available.
The thick card stock was a practical choice: thinner paper stocks degraded rapidly in daily market use. Catalogued under Gari Mon 580-A, suggesting at least one variant exists within the type.
