In the early 1920s, Costa Rica faced a chronic shortage of fractional silver and responded by counterstamping foreign and older domestic coins already in circulation rather than commissioning new strikes. The Type VIII counterstamp was applied at the Casa de Moneda de Costa Rica to bring these pieces into official conformity with the monetary law of 1896, which had standardized the colón system but left a persistent gap in small-denomination silver supply.
KM#159 is one of several counterstamp types catalogued from this period, each distinguished by punch design and application year. Attributing a specific host coin to the type often matters as much to collectors as the counterstamp itself.
