Cieza, a small municipality in Murcia, issued local paper currency during the Spanish Civil War as the national monetary system fractured and small-denomination coinage vanished from circulation entirely. These ayuntamiento notes — produced by hundreds of Spanish towns between 1936 and 1939 — filled an acute practical gap, not a political statement. Three signatures authenticate this particular piece: the alcalde, the interventor, and the depositario, a triumvirate of local administrative authority that gave the notes at least a veneer of institutional legitimacy.
Survival rates for Cieza's emission are modest. Locally printed wartime scrip of this type was rarely archived with care.
