Cieza is a municipality in Murcia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local government issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coin shortages became acute after 1936. The Ayuntamiento series from this period was a direct response to hoarding — silver and copper coinage had vanished almost entirely from circulation, and the central government was slow to supply substitutes at the local level.
The Gari Mon catalogue remains the authoritative reference for these Spanish municipal issues, and the 538-G designation places this squarely within the documented Cieza emission. Survival rates for small-denomination municipal paper from this region vary considerably — many were used hard and discarded once the war ended.
