Castillo de Locubín is a small municipality in the province of Jaén, Andalusia, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during the Civil War, its municipal council issued emergency fractional notes when Republican-zone coinage effectively vanished from circulation after 1936. The hoarding and melting of silver and copper coins created an acute shortage of small change that the central government was slow to address, forcing local bodies — councils, unions, cooperatives — to print their own.
Municipal issues from villages of this size were printed in tiny quantities, often on whatever card stock was at hand, and circulated within strict geographic limits. Most were redeemed or destroyed locally; few survived in any number.
