Castellnou de Montsec is a small municipality in the Pallars Jussà comarca of Lleida, and like hundreds of Catalan villages during the Civil War, it issued its own emergency fractional currency after the Republican government's decree of May 1937 authorised local bodies to produce small-denomination notes to address the acute shortage of coin. Turró catalogued these issues systematically, but many remain genuinely rare — the print runs for villages this small were typically in the hundreds, not thousands, and wartime attrition did the rest.
The thick card stock was a practical response to the absence of proper banknote paper in provincial areas.
