Carrión de Calatrava is a small municipality in Ciudad Real province, and this 50 céntimos note is one of hundreds of tiny local emergency issues that proliferated across Republican-held Spain after the military rising of July 1936 disrupted coin supply nationwide. The Consejo Municipal — effectively the local governing body under wartime conditions — issued fractional notes like this one to fill the gap left by hoarded or disappearing metal coinage, a problem that hit rural communities especially hard.
The Gari Mon catalogue remains the primary reference for these Spanish Civil War municipal issues, and the -B suffix here indicates a recognized variant within the Carrión de Calatrava sequence.
