Comments

Cardona's wartime municipal issues belong to a category of emergency fractional currency that proliferated across Republican-held Catalonia during the Civil War, when coin hoarding and metal shortages made small-denomination transactions nearly impossible. Hundreds of Catalan municipalities issued their own paper fraccions, most in tiny quantities and with no redemption infrastructure that survived the Nationalist advance of early 1939.

The printer, Sabadell y Cia. S. en C., operated from a Barcelona address and handled several of these local commissions. Turró's catalogue remains the primary reference for tracing which towns actually issued versus which merely authorized — Cardona's #677 is among the documented issues.
