Cardona is a small town in the Bages comarca, best known for its salt mountain — one of the largest halite deposits in Europe — and its medieval castle. During the Spanish Civil War, hundreds of Catalan municipalities issued their own small-change notes (moneda local or paper moneda) to compensate for the near-total disappearance of metal coinage from circulation, hoarded almost immediately after July 1936. Cardona was one of dozens of councils that commissioned emergency fractional notes from commercial printers in Barcelona and Sabadell.
Imprenta Litografia Sabadell y Cia. produced notes for multiple municipalities simultaneously, and the Turró catalogue documents considerable variation in paper stock and impression quality across the series. Cardona's issue is catalogued as Turró 673.
