Calonge de la Costa Brava was one of hundreds of Catalan municipalities that issued emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after metallic coinage vanished from circulation almost entirely by mid-1936. The Generalitat de Catalunya had authorized local councils to print their own small-denomination notes as a stopgap, producing one of the most fragmented and locally specific currency episodes in twentieth-century European history. Imprenta C. Barnés in nearby Palamós handled several of these municipal commissions across the Baix Empordà region.
Turró 611 is among the scarcer small-town Catalan issues — Calonge's population at the time was under two thousand.
