Callosa de Ensarriá is a small inland municipality in the Marina Baixa comarca, and like hundreds of Spanish towns during 1936–1939, its municipal council resorted to issuing its own fractional currency when Republican Spain's small-change crisis made centimos coins functionally unavailable. The hoarding and melting of metal coinage — combined with collapsing central supply chains — forced local governments to print or stamp emergency paper at their own discretion, with no standardized format and almost no oversight.

The handstamp is the only security feature, applied directly by the municipal office to authenticate each piece. These stamps vary noticeably in ink density and placement even within single series — a consequence of hurried, low-volume production by non-specialist staff.
