Cálig is a small municipality in the Baix Maestrat comarca of Castellón, and like dozens of similarly sized Valencian towns, its local council resorted to issuing its own emergency fractional currency during 1937 when Republican Spain's small-change shortage became acute enough to paralyze everyday commerce. The Banco de España had effectively ceased supplying low-denomination coin to the provinces, and municipal councils stepped in with whatever printing resources — often local stationers or even school presses — were available.
The Gari Montllor catalogue's -B suffix indicates a recognized variant within the type, most likely distinguishable by stamp color, ink, or a detail of the council seal impression.
