One of hundreds of small-denomination emergency notes issued by Catalan municipalities during the Civil War, when the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate supplies of fractional coinage left local councils scrambling to fill the gap. The Generalitat de Catalunya formally authorized this wave of municipal paper in mid-1936, giving town halls like Caldes de Montbui legal cover to print their own scrip — though quality and design varied wildly from one ajuntament to the next.

Caldes de Montbui, a spa town north of Barcelona known since Roman times for its thermal springs, issued this 50 céntimos alongside companion values. Turró catalogues the series but survival rates for these hyperlocal wartime emissions are unpredictable; many were demonetized and pulped before 1939.
