Cabassers is a village in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona with a population that barely reached a few hundred during the 1930s. That such a small municipality issued its own fractional paper currency speaks directly to the catastrophic breakdown of metallic coinage circulation in Republican Spain during 1937 — silver and copper had been hoarded or melted, and the central government was in no position to supply small change to every Catalan village that needed it. Local councils stepped in by legal necessity, empowered by a June 1937 Generalitat decree authorizing municipal emergency emissions.
Imprenta Solé in Tarragona handled a significant volume of these provincial Catalan emergency issues, which is why the printing quality across Turró-catalogued notes from this period is relatively consistent despite the chaotic circumstances of production.
