Breda is a small Catalan town in the Selva comarca, and like dozens of similarly sized municipalities, it issued its own emergency fractional currency during 1937 when the Republican government's chronic shortage of small-denomination coinage left local commerce effectively paralyzed. These ajuntament-issued notes — often printed on thin cardboard stock — were strictly local instruments, theoretically redeemable only within the issuing municipality and frequently refused even a few kilometers away.
Tipografia A. Benages handled a considerable volume of this emergency municipal work out of Barcelona during the Civil War years, which is why the printing quality across the Turró catalog varies so little between otherwise unrelated issuers.
