Bot is a village in the Terra Alta comarca of Tarragona, and in 1937 its municipal government did what hundreds of Spanish localities did during the Civil War: printed its own fractional paper money to compensate for the catastrophic shortage of coin. The Republican government had lost control of the metals supply, and silver and copper coinage had essentially vanished from everyday trade — hoarded, melted, or simply gone.
Josep Bassa's print shop in Mora d'Ebre served several Terra Alta municipalities during this period, which means the paper stock and typography across the region's emergency notes often share a family resemblance. Turró catalogues this issue as #510.
