One of hundreds of emergency municipal issues produced across Republican Catalonia during the Civil War, this note was authorized under the Generalitat de Catalunya's 1936 decree permitting local councils to issue fractional currency to address the near-total disappearance of metal coin from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply stopped at the front. Les Borges del Camp is a small municipality in the Baix Camp comarca, and its issue was correspondingly modest in volume.
Turró catalogues these Catalan locals exhaustively; #497 places this among the lower-circulation rural issues, many of which survived in unused condition simply because the towns were too small to absorb them.
