Bocairente — a small textile-producing municipality in Valencia's interior — was one of hundreds of Spanish towns that issued its own emergency fractional currency during the Civil War after the Republic's coinage supply collapsed in 1937. The Consejo Municipal stepped in as a de facto monetary authority purely out of necessity; without small-denomination notes, local commerce ground to a halt.
Survival rates for these municipal issues vary enormously by town. Bocairente's wartime administration was not large, and print runs for most Valencian municipal fractionals were modest. The Turró and Gari catalogs both list this issue, but neither assigns it an abundance rating that inspires confidence about easy availability.
