Biosca is a tiny municipality in the Segarra comarca of Catalonia — population well under a thousand even today. During the Civil War, the Republican government's inability to maintain adequate small-denomination coinage in circulation pushed hundreds of Spanish municipalities, including the most obscure, into issuing their own emergency paper fractional currency. These local emergency issues, collectively catalogued under the term *paper moneda*, number in the thousands of varieties across Catalonia alone.
Turró 440 places this squarely within that wartime municipal series. Given Biosca's size, surviving quantities are typically low — small communes printed small runs, and much was never redeemed after Franco's monetary consolidation rendered the issues worthless.
